Buster

Buster departed for The Bridge this week. He was an entertainer who milked a crowd for all the attention he could command. Maybe he opted for a sudden departure for its dramatic effect. Or perhaps he thought it would be a kindness to those he loved to avoid long, agonizing goodbyes. It’s hard to tell what such a dog as Buster was up to.

I wish I had the skills to do justice to the wonder that was Buster. Better you should read Ogee’s Buster’s Little Miracle for that.  Still, I feel compelled to offer a few poor words and some photos to honor our inspirational friend.

Buster truly loved other dogs, and was always there for them. He patrolled the pool deck …

… always ready to provide encouragement…

… or comfort.

Buster was incredibly handsome… but never let that go to his head.

He could be silly…

As hard as I tried I was never able to record a truly great shot of Buster. The lighting may not have been good, or I couldn’t get the color to look right, or I simply didn’t capture the quintessential Buster look or moment. Buster loved to be slightly naughty but he usually telegraphed his intent with a roguish grin. Then he would slowly grab a purse or a sock and make off with his treasure knowing full well you would close in on him in a few moments. Perhaps he was really just trying to grab hold of more of the attention he so loved.

Buster’s miracle allowed him write the final chapter in his life. He may have saved the best for last. Buster charmed everyone at Homeward Bound as the he new office dog but it was Lori that was head-over-heels in love with him from his first day here. I would have gladly taken Buster home myself. But I waited patiently for Lori to make that decision for herself. It wasn’t a hard decision to wait. For I knew all along that Lori’s home would be the best place for him. And Buster was able to spend his last few months in her warm embrace. Just as it was meant to be.

This news breaks my heart, Rob. I’ve been following this boy’s story and was so filled with happiness and relief when he found HB … and friends … and so much JOY. It’s never too late to be happy though I wish his life had always been that way.

My candle will be lit tonight to honor him. You are whole and happy. But most important, you went to the Bridge filled with the love that you had been denied so long. Swift journey, sweet boy.

Thank you for this tribute to Buster–truly a miracle dog in so many ways. He won lots of hearts, and lots of hearts are broken this week. But what matters most is that Lori and Buster chose each other and gave each other such unconditional love. Lori gave Buster the best time of his life, and for that all of us–not just Buster–are grateful.
