Dogs at Play

Photographing dogs at play can be a most excellent treat for a photographer. You get to capture interesting expressions and attitudes. But you have to expect fewer keepers and be willing to move quickly. Some dogs surprise you. I’ve written about Yule, a dog many volunteers never expected to be able to play nicely with other dogs. Turns out he sees play as a contact sport but has a soft mouth to keep things safe. Play can also be therapeutic for some dogs. Charley was drugged because he behaved like … a puppy. To be fair, he also ate a…

Bella the Great Dane

Homeward Bound is a rescue dedicated to saving Golden Retrievers but we are sometimes able to extend care to other breeds when room permits. Bella the Great Dane was one of our most unusual guests. This reminds me of a joke my first Golden would use on me when we crossed paths with a Great Dane. I’d say, “Look, Buddy, there’s a Great Dane.” His response was invariably the same: “Yeah, what’s so great about him?” C’mon, Buddy was a dog. That’s not bad considering.

My paramour has returned

That would be Yule. I wrote about him in my very first blog. His Mom is off on yet another adventure so he came to stay with me this morning. I have kennels in a converted garage, and that is where he stayed on previous visits, but I already have 2 dogs out there. So Yule needs to be inside the house this time. We introduced Yule to my dog, Scrappy, during Yule’s most recent visit. That went well which was pretty exciting since Yule had been pegged as needing to be the only dog in a household. But after…

Bailey returns

One of my favorite things is to visit with dogs from Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue after they get adopted. Our alumni occasionally pop in for a short visit but sometimes I am lucky enough to get some extended time when they board with me. Bailey is here for over a week while his family is on vacation. He’s a handsome, high energy boy that loves to play. Better get some extra sleep so I have enough energy to keep up with him!

Turnabout is fair play, I suppose

Last week I wondered in a post if I had been cheating on my dog, Scrappy. Today I found out what it’s like to be on the receiving end. Scrappy asked me if I would take his picture this afternoon in the Homeward Bound Memorial Garden. Seemed suspicious but I obliged him. When we finished I went back in the Homeward Bound office for a short time and returned to find him with … Lori! He must have set up a date. I hid in the bushes and tried to take the best shots I could. There they were all…

Am I cheating on my dog?

Technically, Scrappy is a permanent foster — a dog that can’t be adopted — but I consider him to be mine. He’s a great dog. I love him dearly. He’s cute. He’s got personality. But at a place like Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue you are tempted by many of the new dogs that show up every week. Yule came to us last year just before Christmas. Note: I did not name him. He was a stray so we knew nothing about him. Except that he was scared … and gorgeous. We all attempted to soothe his anxieties but he…
