Monty & Scrappy

I was out in the back with Scrappy and Lilly this evening. I took some shots with the camera. Tried to get Lilly to stop posing like a goof when I had her next to Scrappy. No luck. I suddenly decided to introduce Scrappy and the new boy, Monty. I’m normally reluctant to do a dog intro by myself but I felt okay about this one. Scrappy is pretty safe in such situations but I chose not to include Lilly. She can wait until tomorrow. I returned both Scrappy and Lilly and out them behind a barrier. Then I ushered…

Montgomery (Monty Python)

Monty is a stray that was picked up in Bakersfield. He arrived at HB on Saturday, April 1. We thought he was too frightened to brave the noisy kennels so I took him home. We didn’t have a kennel for him anyway so he had to go somewhere. He’s a very sweet boy with the unseemly habit of lifting his leg in the house. He goes to the vet tomorrow morning so Dr. Codde can rearrange his manly parts. I’m hoping that will fix his desire to mark where he has been.

When I have Yule here I like to introduce him to new dogs in hopes of widening his circle of friends. As you may recall, Yule is not the trusting type when it comes to dogs he is not acquainted with. He used to bark furiously whenever he as much as saw a strange dog at a distance. Looks like we messed up some numbers…

A brief run through the HB garden

I haven’t shot much in the Homeward Bound Memorial Garden lately. And I probably won’t do so for the near future at least. But yesterday I took a dog over to visit with his best friend, Lori, and that gave me an unexpected opportunity to spend a few minutes in the garden.

Ruffians

Dogs have many different play styles. One of the key elements of effective dog socialization is matching dogs that have similar views on what is “fun” when they hang together. For some dogs — and not necessarily just the older ones — a good time is lying in the shade on a sunny day sipping lemonade. Then there are dogs like Ryder and Decoda that play as if they are mortal enemies. 10 years ago I would have freaked had two dogs started up like this in my presence. This time I just took a moment to make sure they…
