Newcomers

A couple new dogs arrived in the last week. One is a boarder named Charlie. I worked with Charlie in 2015. He was surrendered to HB because of excess anxiety if I recall correctly. He was diagnosed with pica — regularly eating nonfood items such as pebbles. He was taking Prozac when we got him. Turned out his problem was really just that he was a puppy. We weaned him off the Prozac, worked with some of his behaviors, and he was adopted right away. Charlie is now a very happy and healthy boy enjoying what life has to offer….

Leroy

At Homeward Bound we get new dogs in every week. When I came up to the front of the rescue to see our new residents, Leroy definitely stood out. Having escaped from his own crate shortly before arrival, he was was standing on another dog’s crate eager to make his exit. He had to wait, though, because we had to move some crates so he could get down safely. I was drawn to him immediately. “I want to take him home,” I said. I’m not sure exactly why I felt that way. McLeod

We’ve had a bunch of dogs that make my heart beat faster lately. There is more than one kind of dog that does that to me but the red ones tend to have a leg up on the others. McLeod came and went quickly as you can well imagine. He was one type of almost perfect dog for me — the young and playful type. He was a little shy at first but quickly passed through it. His personality was much like my first Golden, Buddy. Very physical play with lots of affection. It’s amazing how fast you can form…

Arco is visiting

Arco arrived on Sunday for four weeks. No, not the Sacramento sports arena — the dog. Arco’s not a Homeward Bound alumnus; I met him when he lived across the street from me in Folsom. Not the prison — the city where the prison is located. For some reason Arco fixated on me and he watched my house intently for any sign that I might come out. Sometimes he would come over and bark on my porch, yelling at me to come out and pay attention to him. I opened the door once when he was there and he came…
