The Homeward Bound Gardeners have blessed us with some beautiful roses to admire. The Memorial Garden looks wonderful and remains an oasis of peace and tranquility for volunteers and dogs alike. I don’t do much at all in the garden anymore so I’m not always up on the latest developments. I recently noticed the abundance of aster in our midst. It’s wonderful. There is one item that is a little concerning though. I don’t know for sure if I was supposed to see this. I’m all for experimentation and new ideas and such. But I’m wondering if grafting milkweed on…

Sometimes you just want to get closer
I probably should be writing about Teddy. I’ve been working with him for a while and he’s an interesting dog. But I don’t have the energy at the moment. Plus, I think we may be on the cusp of a significant accomplishment. I hope. So more to come on this boy. I did, however, feel the garden beckoning late this afternoon. I have been using one lens a lot lately and felt an urge to get closer to the subject so I pulled out the macro. There were some new roses to shoot. And some irises. The iris was one…
The garden is ready to explode
Spring arrived early in Sacramento this year. That means the Homeward Bound Memorial Garden is ahead of schedule. It seems as if every day something new bursts forth to pay tribute to the many canine companions helped by Homeward Bound. This photo was taken almost a week ago and it’s already obsolete. Dogs are frequent visitors, of course. This is Shelby. We have something new this year. I was told that these metal traps are meant to capture some critter that has been damaging the garden. The gardeners called them snapes or snoops … something like that. I couldn’t get…
Ms. C. Laney in the garden
Random shots from the Homeward Bound Memorial Garden. First we have Frida, the garden cat. She just finished eating her supper in the shed. Something may not have agreed with her. Frida is there for the mice, not the birds. Although we do seem to have lots of birds around. We also have a mechanical man. And a blue spruce all dolled up for Christmas. Some of the roses are still hanging on. Several benches where you can rest your weary bones and enjoy the view. Even if you do have cataracts. And a piece of art that makes use…
The holiday owls have returned
Nope. I have no idea what these owls have to do with any holiday, or even which holiday. All I know is they show up at Homeward Bound every year about this time.
The Bradford leaves
The Homeward Bound Memorial Garden has a couple of trees whose leaves turn a vivid red and gold in the fall. I’m told they are Bradford pears. Every year I try to capture their glory but my results never seem to match the spectacular reality. It seem to me that the Bradfords are the last trees to fully turn and ultimately free their leaves. Sometimes events accelerate the process. The shot above was taken two days ago on Saturday. On Sunday we were visited by a storm and the tree now looks … quite naked. No, little tree it’s not a…
I was in the garden today
My words won’t add to the beauty in the Homeward Bound Memorial so let’s just jump to what I saw:
