Old things
I’ve always loved old things. I have my grandmother’s cast iron dutch oven that’s at least a hundred years old. My grandmother once let me keep an arrowhead I found on her property. It seemed ancient and wondrous to me. Sadly, it didn’t take long for me to drop it and watch, horrified, as it split into two or three pieces. I was inconsolable. I distinctly recall the day I discovered a row of old books in the graduate library at university. One day I was walking down an aisle looking for a new carrel to claim — someone had…

Teddy Bear
About a month ago I started to like Teddy. That’s when I knew he was just about ready to go home. To his forever home. I should be clear: It’s not that I didn’t like Teddy, it’s just that there wasn’t much of anything to, um, like about his behavior. The pattern was familiar: Dog walkers with harried looks asking me when I’m going to take Teddy home. Lisa faithfully taking Teddy to the park for a good workout every day (because Teddy knows she’s the boss). Many volunteers taking him to a yard because he’s too much for them…

Scrappy has something to say
I ought to be posting about Teddy tonight but Scrappy was getting positively chatty earlier this evening. That’s unusual so I figure he wants me to share. That’s Ginorma the Snake he has with him.
Rusty
On Monday evening I had Scrappy over at Homeward Bound for a walk. I thought I spotted a dog I knew getting picked up from boarding. I was right … it was Rusty. I remembered that I wanted to take Rusty home the first time I saw him. Not just for his unique look although I admit he is beautiful. But he also has a soulful quality that drew me in. Turned out he was a timid guy that needed to build some confidence. It was clear from seeing him on Monday that his new family had been doing exactly…
Scrappy has visitors
Last weekend Scrappy had two visitors, Buddy and Yule. I’ve written about Yule a few times already. He’s Scrappy’s best friend. It’s gratifying to see them get excited when they spot each other approaching for a visit. Buddy had been with us once or twice before but Scrappy mostly gives him the cold shoulder. That’s okay because Buddy is still getting used to being around other dogs so just being around Scrappy for a few days is good for him. Buddy does quite well considering he was a backyard dog for the first 5 years of this life. He’s a…
